SLADE MERCER (the man who was Max Damage) - Life in the UK

KPW fans! It's your favourite son, former KPW Heavyweight Champion Max Damage - though nowadays, I campaign as "Slade Mercer".

It's been a long time since I've been asked to write for the KPW website, but KPW CEO Rip Morgan has helped me immensely, and when he asked me to update the KPW faithful on my journey, I jumped at the chance.

Appropriate too that I write this only a few days before history is made - WWF legend and Kiwi wrestling icon Bushwhacker Luke returning for one night only at "Halloween Howl 6", in the middle of the KPW ring, in a building that has been party to so great moments in New Zealand professional wrestling, Wellington High School.

For those of you who don't follow me on Twitter (@kiwiwrestler), visit my website ( or like me on Facebook (, then you wouldn't know about what has been happening with yours truly...

I've up and left the sunny shores of Brisbane, Queensland... for the rainy shores of the United Kingdom! Choosing to follow in the footsteps of great ring technicians such as "Sir" William Regal, Robbie Brookside, Frankie Sloan, Drew MacDonald and more recent luminaries such as Sheamus and Wade Barrett, I moved here to the UK to learn more about wrestling from some of the best talent this business has to offer.

What a blast it's been! In a few short months, I've already wrestled up and down the country, made loads of new fans and had a ball doing it. The wrestling in the UK is vastly different to anything I've experienced before, both in Australia and New Zealand: the opponents here are much tougher and better versed in submissions, so matches last longer, and are often contested in rounds, which means two falls or two submissions for a win. It's taken a lot of hard work to get used  to it - I've even dropped a few kilos as a result!

I've already worked with some great talent here - the likes of Jonny Storm, Flash Barker, Zack Sabre Jnr., Marty Scurll, and Frankie Sloan. I've even locked horns with another KPW talent you might have heard of... the one and only "Standard Hero" Graham Hughes!  Unluckily for Graham, he and his tag team partner were on the losing effort of a best-of-three falls bout that went for thirty minutes (I don't think he expected me to have gotten as good as I have)!

I've worked for some of the UK's top wrestling promotions - all Star Promotions, Premier Promotions and IPW:UK, amongst others.I'll be sure to update you all again when I have more news - for now, its getting pretty wet and cold around these parts. Definitely wishing for a Christmas on the beach like you'll all be having!

But before Christmas is "Halloween Howl 6" - KPW's marquee event, an event I've performed on numerous times! I only wish I could be there to see two legends of our country and the wrestling world come together again to lick a few heads and eat some sardines!
